A guided mindfulness session to practice at work (Video)
As you may already know, mindfulness is simply being focused on the present moment. During that time, we become aware of our thoughts, our emotions, our physical sensations, and the surrounding environment without judging how we are feeling or what we are thinking about. This helps us to cope better with negative or difficult thoughts and feelings that can cause stress and anxiety in our everyday life.
If you work in a fast-paced, stressful environment, mindfulness is an excellent way to de-stress and rebalance your nervous system, toning down that fight-or-flight response and engaging the wise and creative part of your brain. That way, you reduce mistakes, you increase productivity, and you also make better decisions instead of simply reacting to situations.
In the video above, our coach Sabrina Cadini guides you through an easy three-step mindfulness exercise that you can do every day at work. You don’t need to dedicate 30 minutes or longer to this, every minute counts. For instance, if you’re going to tackle your inbox, or you are going to start working on a task or a project, before immersing yourself in this activity, do the following for the next few minutes:
Step ONE
Take a few calm, long breaths. Follow your breathing while you inhale and exhale. Your breath is always there with you, so connect to it as often as you can.
Step TWO
Get up from your chair while you still focus on your breathing. Allow your shoulders to drop that tension that you may have accumulated after being in front of your screen for several hours.
Notice the physical sensations in your body instead of letting your mind wander to those emails you need to respond to or to that task that is waiting for you. Stay here in the present moment and pay attention to yourself.
