Is procrastination your friend or foe? (Video)

National Procrastination Week is usually celebrated during the first two weeks in March, and the goal is to intentionally leave necessary tasks to be done at a later time. This sounds counterproductive, but you may have noticed that procrastination is a pattern of behavior to survive under pressure. By deciding that you will procrastinate, you create mental and emotional space that help you lower stress and anxiety levels.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should encourage yourself or others to be lazy or to not take action. Instead, being intentional about your procrastination helps you focus on and accomplish other tasks and activities that you wouldn’t be able to complete due to all your daily responsibilities. You can dedicate more time to reading, cooking, exercising, or just relaxing.

Procrastination can be caused by having too much on your plate and you can’t prioritize, perfectionism, being tired, fear of failure or fear of not being able to finish the task well or in time, feeling that the task is not relevant to your goals, or not being clear on the task and you don’t know where to start.

Many people see procrastination as a way to stop and think, to find new ideas and become more creative, so they consider it a helpful tool to succeed in life and at work. However, procrastination can sabotage your goals and lead to negative repercussions on your productivity and career if you let it run the show.

So, you can certainly celebrate National Procrastination Week and enjoy some me time, but we hope procrastination doesn’t become a normal way of operating in your life.

Once you take that first small step, you may think that it was not so hard after all, and you feel more motivated to continue, you keep the momentum going.
