Time for a mid-year goal review session (Video)

If you tend to set multiple goals at the beginning of the year and then you fail to keep up with them, you are not alone! Between work and family responsibilities, last-minute emergencies, or just having too much on your plate, it’s easy to lose momentum and put your goals on the side. But a great way to keep working towards your goals and stay motivated is to do a mid-year review or reflection.

If you’re new to mid-year reviews, we’re here to help! During a mid-year review or reflection, you go through all of the goals that you created in January (we hope you put them in writing) and evaluate everything. By doing this, you can measure what is working and change what is not. It’s totally normal if your goals become less relevant after a few months and reviewing them at this time of the year is very useful to correct the course or create new ones.

There are many ways to perform a mid-year reflection, and there are many ways that you can set goals. Some people divide them between personal and professional, some other create categories for them (such as family and relationships, career, finances, wellness, spiritual, and so on), or some other people only concentrate on business goals, even though we strongly recommend that you work on your personal goals as well since these can be instrumental to improve productivity and performance in your job. Our body and brain are the ultimate tools to allow us to achieve anything we want in life, so never forget the importance of taking care of yourself!

In this blog post, we share the most common step-by-step process for a mid-year reflection. Make sure you can dedicate about 30 minutes to an hour to go over the following steps and write everything down; this includes your reflection and your plan for the rest of the year because that will be easier to follow and remind yourself about.

Step 1 - Think about your key accomplishments

Ask yourself what your biggest wins were, what goals you achieved, and what you’re most proud of. This can be related to different areas:

  • Relationships that you established such as a new friendship or a new business collaboration.

  • Skills that you learned or improved

  • Setting up an emergency fund for your family

Whatever goal you had at the beginning of the year, analyze it and see how well you did.

Step 2 - Take a look at what didn’t work

Ask yourself what goals you missed and why. This is very important to understand what got in the way: was it lack of time, lack of finances, lack of support, lack of a clear plan? This information will help you modify the goal accordingly.

You might also notice some mistakes that you have done, and this is also helpful to avoid making the same mistakes in the future if you want to stick with the same goals you set at the beginning of the year.

What you don’t want to do here is blaming yourself for not being able to achieve those goals. The purpose here is to use the setback as a learning opportunity, gain perspective, and find ways to improve.
